An evening at Puerta Cortés

Just say you're coming to the marina for dinner.

That is all you need at the gate. There is no list, no name to give, and nothing to show. The marina and its restaurants are open to anyone coming to dine.

Marina Costa Baja and Puerta Cortés from the air

What Puerta Cortés is

It is a residential community on Marina Costa Baja, about twenty minutes from central La Paz. There is a staffed gate around the clock, which is exactly what makes it calm: parking is safe, the boardwalk is lit, and you can walk it at night without thinking twice.

The marina, its restaurants and its shops receive visitors every day. Majagua sits at the end of the dock, ninety covers under the pergola, with La Ciruela under the same roof.

01 · Arrive

Twenty minutes and a good evening

Leave La Paz on the Pichilingue road and after about twenty minutes you will see the Puerta Cortés entrance on your right. Roll the window down, say good evening, and say you're coming to the marina for dinner. The barrier goes up and you drive on.

02 · Walk

Come half an hour early

You can walk the whole dock in ten minutes, and at that hour every one of them is worth it: moored sailboats, pelicans, the sky going from gold to blue. It is the best part of the evening and it costs nothing.

After dinner the same walk works just as well, with the boat lights on and a turn through La Ciruela on the way.

03 · Dine

Ninety covers under the pergola

Farm-to-table Mexican cooking, with the day's catch from the bay, prime cuts, tiraditos and the tacos everyone orders. Service is run by experienced waiters from Mexico City alongside new talent from La Paz.

La Ciruela, before you drive back

Twelve workshops and labels from Mexico and Latin America, all artisan-made, under the same roof as the restaurant. Every piece has a maker, a village and a technique, and in the shop they will tell you all three.
